Susan Hayward's poor performance

At the time the movie was released, a critic with the Saturday Review noted that it "somehow manages to make every dramatic line (particularly when uttered by Susan Hayward) sound like a caption to a cartoon in The New Yorker."

That's interesting.

Not very.

Interesting, nevertheless.

Bad performances in films of the classic era may become unwatchable over time. But a snappy, well-observed movie review never ceases to amuse, no matter how old it is.

That review made me want to watch Hayward chew the scenery again.

That opening scene where the murder takes place takes the cake. And when Hayward screams at Connors, "You're a drunk! A DRUNK!!!"

And when she's panting and heaving near the end, just before she starts tearing up that portrait of Bette Davis.

Priceless, hammy acting. Not even Joey Heatherton was that bad.
