Am I alone in loving this movie(never seen the play) I just love the tale of revenge and money. It is just shocking to me to see that this as afilm never truly took off. I think its a shame for new generations to have not had an oppertunity to get this film another try.
I am absolutely in LOVE with this movie---I had never even heard of it, until my drama teacher decided to do it for our fall production this year. I was Claire, and seriously, do read the Maurice Valency adaptation of the play. It's fantastically written, from both the dialogue and character development.
The movie, though, was different in the ending in the way that Serg Miller (Anton Schill in the play) didn't die, which was a little unsatisfying, but the way the directors handled it was marvellous. And it's a huge shame that new generations won't have an opportunity for the film to really take off, because it's never been released on VHS or DVD. I myself had to get it from a personal rare movie dealer, who'd gotten it from the original reel, and trust me, it's very treasured.
I will search for the Maurice Valency adaptation of the play. Good writting is difficult to find to day and if the Maurice Valency verstion is as well written as you say it is then it will be well worth the read.
Thanyou it difficult to find anyone that has seen this film to share thought on it
I too saw this movie years ago and have never forgotten it -- I'd love to be able to buy a copy or record it "off the air". Certainly one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I wish I could say I liked this as much as most of the folks here, but I found this film preachy, moralistic and overacted. The dubbed dialogue was a huge distraction for me. 5/10 stars.
