Best Jesus film ever?

Is this the best Jesus film ever? What other films come close to it (Christ figures not included, so Jésus de Montréal is of the table).

I haven't seen Mel Gibson's film neither Last temptation of Christ by Scorsese. I can't think of another film.

The Last Temptation of Christ is one. Nicholas Ray's The King of Kings is also pretty good. As well as Franco Zeffirelli's miniseries.

reply

I would say that it is the best I have seen.

reply

This film was the most original by far. The bleakness, unknown actors, black and white, the incredible music score all made it undeniably the best Jesus film for me and I've seen them all.

reply

I prefer Last Temptation

reply

Interesting but not the best. I like Ray's King of Kings, followed by The Last Temptation, then Godspell.

reply

The Last Temptation. . . was good except for Judas' New York accent.

I think Jesus of Montreal shares the same passionate anger although it's not strictly a story about Jesus Christ himself.

This may make me unpopular here but my favourite Jesus film is Jesus Christ Superstar because we see a whole man whose purpose hurts him but from which he never sways even if he doubted sometimes.

I love Jesus Christ Superstar. My review: http://letterboxd.com/thorkell/film/jesus-christ-superstar/

And The Last Temptation of Christ. Review: http://letterboxd.com/thorkell/film/the-last-temptation-of-christ/

Both have a very human Jesus.

Yes, I think this Pasolini version is possibly the best film about Jesus..certainly the most artistic. But Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" comes pretty close; that is quite a beautiful film, and at 6 hours, it really immerses the viewer in that time and place. I never could stomach those "Hollywoodized" versions, with big stars playing Jesus. Like that one with Jaqueline Bisset as Mary! That movie was a real fiasco.

And nobody is mentioning "Greatest Story Ever Told." It's not in the same league, but it is a good film.

My problem with Greatest Story Ever Told is that Jesus is so not of that world. He talks and behaves like he is from heaven. Hands raced to the sky. He is clean and bright and celestial. The film looks great but it feels like the Sunday school version of Jesus.

This is true, but I think it's the same with most films from this time. It's a big Hollywood epic. I think it's a nice telling of the story, however it doesn't come close to Pasolini's "Gospel According to St. Mathew," or Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth." I believe these are the two best films of the Bible; they are works of art, as well as entertainment.

Actual Christ: The Last Temptation. While I loved what The Gospel According to Saint Matthew was trying to do, I found it a bit slow.

Christ Figure: Life of Brian. Though Jesus himself makes a cameo, so maybe this fits both bills.

FYC: Keanu Reeves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvaCWTkSXdE

Ordet and The Passion of Joan of Arc are both great, although I acknowledge that these aren't literally movies about Jesus himself. They both have something to say though.
