The Title

Not much action on this board, is there?

I wondered if anyone else had commented on the title. 'Hiki/biki' is, as I understand it, the counter you use for little things - insects, goldfish, kittens. It's funny to use it for people.

reply

It's the counter for animals, not necessarily small ones. It's not meant literally (obviously,) it conveys "fierceness" and wouldn't seem all that odd to a native speaker.

Three beasts of samurai! cool.

I looked it up and you're right, technically hiki/biki is the counter for small critters. Apparently over time it's become acceptable to use it for animals in general, though some frown on it. Somehow I never learned that, thank you for helping me in my quest to learn at least one new thing every day. ;)

reply

I'm like Homer Simpson, everything I learn pushes something else out. At least in the quest for reasonable fluency in Japanese.

Fun, though, isn't it?

I do not know why my iMAC flips back and forth between kana???

I agree with you about the title; it is confusing. I studied 日本語入力1990。I love it.
