Who won the fight?

Of the fight in the tavern, Wikipedia says that Ivan snatched up his axe, but the sorcerer struck him down. My own impression, though, was that Ivan had slain the sorcerer; when he walked out of the tavern, there were large red stains on Ivan's garments that had not been there earlier. What did all of you think about this scene?
