Other surreal films like this?

I saw this film recently and it blew me away. I'd really like to find more films like this one - films that are surreal and imaginative, yet still grounded in reality and with a cohesive plot. Anyone have any suggestions?

Watch Teshigahara's "The Face of Another" - that's another of his 'existential / surreal' films that are in this vein. Also try his "The Ruined Map" although not exactly like it, but it's got certain stylistic elements that are similar in terms of surrealism.

One of my favourite movies of all time.

Almost anything by Luis Buñuel, especially El ángel exterminador (1962).

I do not agree with that, but El ángel exterminador (1962) that I believe is a spot on recommendation.

One movie this one reminded me of a lot is Wake In Fright. It has a similar plot in some ways -- a teacher on vacation ends up stuck in a little nowhere town (because he gambles away all his money and can't afford the fare to get out) and has to hang around with a bunch of degenerates, trying to get out. Really good.

'Eraserhead' - Maybe not quite like this film, but an incredibly existential and mysterious film without question. And a pretty disturbingly uneasy one to view as well.

This could apply to just about any Shohei Imamura film. My favourites is Profound Desires of the Gods.

I’ll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.
