I realize this is an allegorical film, but there is no way sand could be at the apparent 90 degree angle depicted in this film. Teshigahara himself said he couldn't get the sand at an angle greater than 30 degrees.

I know this from personal experience climbing the Eureka and Kelso "singing" sand dunes in California. I would estimate the greatest angle was around 35 or 40 degrees at Kelso. It was very difficult, and it took me three hours to get to the top, but I did make it.

15 months later later I went up a different face at a lower angle (probably about 30 degrees) with trekking poles. It took me about 45 minutes.
