Somewhere between the absurd and the surreal lies Hiroshi Teshigahara’s haunting 1960 film Woman in the Dunes. Junpei Niki (Eiji Okada), a school teacher and amature entomologist, has traveled from Tokoyo into an eerie desert landscape, hoping to study a previously unclassified insect. Polite and absentminded, he misses the last bus home and must find some sort of shelter for the night. A seemingly helpful villager suggests that Junpei stay with a widow who dwells in a hut beneath a sand dune. Things quickly go south: Junpei finds himself trapped, unable to scale up out of the dune. The villagers want him to marry the mysterious widow (Kyoko Kishida) so that he can assist her in the daily routine of digging out the sand that’s constantly seeping into her house: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/blu/blu-ray-review-woman-dunes/
