Scene didn't make sense

The doctor comes by for a visit and is going to talk to Lucy about bringing her back to the hospital. The daughter asks what Lucy and the doctor talked about and Lucy's response is something to the effect of, "Oh, nothing much."

It's meant to look like Lucy killed the doctor and has no ability to cover it up. In retrospect, this makes no sense. Did Lucy even talk to the doctor? Was she pretending to remember to cover up her growing insanity? Since we know Lucy didn't kill the doctor, what was going on?

I think Lucy did talk to the doctor...but put yourself in her shoes, 20 years you're locked up in a loony bin with the likes of him seeing you every day, you get out, you think you have your life back and then the doctor comes along again, and you're worried you may have to go back. I think after she finished talking to the doctor she forced herself to forget as much of it as she could so she wouldn't have to bring it up, or remember it.

well, she did talk to the doctor. She was lying to Carol. Then she ran out of the house. and she lied to Carol about seeing the doctor off. then the next morning she told her that she talked to him and ran out and never saw him off.

My thoughts are that daughter knew why the doctor would want to talk to Lucy and what about. She was only asking to then be able perhaps say the doctor is wrong, pretending to support her mother. Lucy unwittingly messed that up for her by not saying much. Lucy was not growing insane. She was only thinking she was. That is what the daughter was trying to do.
