Originally the film was called Cannibal Orgy or the Maddest Story Ever Told. The financiers went broke (they were actually Real Estate agents) so the film was stuck in the lab for non-payment. Eventually David Hewitt heard about the film and paid the bill and released it under the title Spider Baby. However, by that time the Drive-ins didn't want B&W films anymore, so it played as second bill on double features.

Yes, B&W releases were still commonplace in 1964 and 1965; not so by '67 or '68.
