Something that seemed inconsistent -

At the end of the movie

(A) Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall tell Natalie that Tony Curtis lost his job because he wouldn't turn in the trashy story. How did they know this?

(B) Tony Curtis tells Natalie in the car that he tried to turn in a nice story about how Natalie's advice helped save Lauren's & Fonda's marriage, and THAT'S why he lost his job. I know he was fired because he refused to turn in the trashy story, but I don't recall any mention of his trying to turn in an alternate story.

Did I miss something or are these writing errors?
