Spoiler alert: the ending

If the judge determined that the girl is being forced, wouldn't Peppino be back in jail with charges of corrupting a minor? How can a minor be eligible to give consent for marriage? Also, who fixed the marriage if the father was in bed? How can a marriage take place if the father is sick in bed?

reply

Peppino was already out on bail for the charge of corrupting a minor.

Her parents gave their consent to the marriage, but the judge needed to make sure Agnese wanted it also, and he could tell she did not and that she was being forced to consent.

How the marriage got fixed after the father became deathly ill on his doorstep was confusing. It was never explained. Maybe something was edited out. But it did make sense for Agnese to give in and consent to the marriage to please her dying father.

A father's presence isn't mandatory for a marriage to take place. He wanted it to take place as soon as possible, so they did it without him.
