Malmess - The original Agent Smith!

While definitely an all-around decent flick story-wise, this movie is elevated substantially by Hisaya Ito's performance as Malmess. Sure he's wearing that goofy outfit in his first scene, but upon reaching Japan he's in a stylish suit for the remainder of the film. Malmess could've easily been an over-the-top, cartoonish villain but thankfully Ito chose to play him as an extremely thoughtful, even soft-spoken man; the goofiness is left to his cohorts.

Two scenes stand out in particular - first when when he restrains one of his men from following the "Venusian" into her hotel room, calmly explaining that since Selina didn't recognize him it might not be her. Secondly when, after confirming it is indeed Selina, he quietly interrogates her about the whereabouts of her golden bracelet, and, despite drawing a knife, never once loses his temper or even raises his voice. He seems to understand what the issue is (i.e. that she is possessed by Venusian, or at least thinks she is), and thus speaks to her as if she were a different person, building his questions around her apparent amnesia to get to the answers with as little difficulty as possible.

All this AND he drives that kick-butt Mercedes. Which sadly meets the same fate as its owner.

So, a truly awesome human villain in a very understated, and underrated, performance by a really great actor. Made especially awesome by the fact Malmess didn't actually need to be a particularly interesting character for the story to progress. He just winds up becoming one as a result of Ito's acting.
