Origin behind reindeer concept

According to a Chicago neighborhood paper, Robert May chose a reindeer since deers was his daughter 's favorite animal at Lincoln Park Zoo located in Chicago. A fave haunt of mine. A sad note, he often took his daughter or possibly children to the zoo to distract her/them from worrying about his wife who was dying from cancer.

The "reindeer concept" for Santa Claus's sleigh-pullers was already old. May just added Rudolph.

I do not think the zoo has deer anymore, at least the last time I was there which was only a few years ago. Maybe I missed them.
