Six reindeer instead of eight?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I noticed there are six reindeer instead of eight behind Rudolph? Was this by design or an oversight on the part of the crew?

I suspect it was just easier to do it that way.

Cheaper..all due respect but Videocraft/Rankin-Bass did cheap work, a compliment, actually (later, like with the remake with Walter Matthua as Scrooge, or, THE STINGIEST MAN IN TOWN.

They didn't have enough money for 8 reindeer. Those puppets weren't cheap to make

reply

Yeah and when santa drove his sled out of the elfs shop at the end two addtional reindeer are following behind and NOT pullin the sleigh...wtf?

reply

I think they the the elves that parachuted out of the sleigh.

Also, they didn't film TV specials in widescreen back then.

I'd imagine 6 with a sleigh and Rudolph was easier to fit on the screen.

reply

It said there was a sub-plot where the reindeer were split up for some reason...it was edited out

reply

Well, Donner was the team leader and in the end, he stays behind at the end as the sleigh takes off. I imagine he did that so Rudolph could have that honor without being in his dad's shadow.

As for the other missing reindeer, I like to imagine Comet was grounded for his behavior of excluding Rudolph at the reindeer games.

Maybe an oversight or something. Also I can't tell which of the other reindeer are apart from each other...
