In real life, Elvis rode a Harley-Davidson, but in this movie they put him on this silly little Honda with safety bars on the sides and he looks pathetic. Why didn't he insist on using a bike that would have been more in keeping with his leather-jacket-wearing hard-boiled character? Maybe Honda had some investment in the movie, but Elvis was certainly big enough at that point to do what he wanted to. I can't believe he didn't laugh when he first saw what he was supposed to ride.

His character was supposed to be a poor vagabond. Would a Harley Davidson fit the plot?

Back in the early '60s, yes. You could pick up a used Harley for a couple of hundred bucks. It was before they became rich-guy status symbols.
