Blu ray is stunning

I had never heard of this movie till I saw criterion was releasing it on blu ray, and thank god I took a chance on it. The landscapes in the film are like beatiful works of art, and the style of the sci fi elements are so creative and out there. This is notable because the film goes for a realistic approach as well. This really should be considered one of the top sci fi films of all time. You can tell that the director knew that atmosphere was key.

Let's not go quite so overboard with the praise. I gave it a solid 4/10 but it's certainly one of the weaker films on the Criterion Collection. The sci-fi element was pretty cheesy, forgivable, but nothing extraordinary.

it was all about the atmosphere for me, and this movie delivered in spades. I'll admit I tend to be a style over substance guy sometimes.....

reply

Me too but I didn't find much style here. I found it very plain looking, empty sets and still cameras.

oh come on man, don't tell me that dream sequence wasn't spot on. I loved the sequences with the alien ships zipping in and out too. Another scene that comes to mind was towards the end of the film when they are walking out of a crater and there is a huge fire gyser behind them.

For what it's worth, ezra, I agree with you.

I just got this on Blu-ray today, watched it tonight, and thoroughly enjoyed it all the way. The film creates it own compellingly atmospheric world. There's a scientific curiosity value as well, as Haskin and his writers were ahead of NASA in a lot of their thinking for this film.

(Criterion obviously agrees with you too, or this title wouldn't be in the Collection. As with Armageddon, which was included for its sheer strength of technical filmmaking, not because of any supposed arthouse qualities.)

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Exactly my thought on this movie, I absolutely love the atmosphere.
But as always with atmospheric movies, it's a hit or miss, depending on taste of each person. I personally can love movies without any substance (but I'm not saying it's the case here) as long as the atmosphere is here and touches me.

I also love the fact that because of technical limitations, all is not showed in details and that gives a lot to the viewer's own imagination.
Definitely one of my favorite 60s sci-fi movies.

Once more, I'm so angry that the Criterion Collection is region A/1 only (even with non-US movies...), a real shame...

Bluray is excellent

OP is correct--Robinson Crusoe on Mars is one of the top sci-fi films of all time, and fully worthy of inclusion in the Criterion Collection.
