INITIAL ALIEN SPACE SHIP SIGHTING

To all RCOM loyalists, let me say that I saw this movie on the big screen when it was released. I loved it then and I love it these many years later. I have a nice copy of the laser disc version for viewing on a regular basis but, I'll still purchase the reported Criterion release in September.

So, I'm not a "knit-picker" regards the movie but, I've always had a question regarding a particular scene and would like to hear other opinions about it. In the scene when "Kit" first views the alien space vehicles from his cave, darting about in space, he exclaims something to the effect that, "they're here to rescue us". I've always wondered why that scene was played that way. It's obvious by the way those ships are moving (like flying saucers) that they are NOT from planet Earth and one would think the astronaut would realize that too. Does anyone agree that it would have been much more realistic for him to take a skeptical view as to their origin. Like, "wow...those things sure don't move like anything from earth but, we've got to get a closer look at them Mona". As an explorer, curiosity would have overcome fear and he would have investigated. What do you think?

I think it's kinda safe to assume that after despirate lonliness, he was just being over-optomistic Maybe he wasn't always thinking clearly. Months alone should have some negative effect. Fortunately, his mind was clear enough to fight to survive.

At any rate I just sit back & enjoy! I'm looking forward to this DVD. I think this time it's the real deal!

The escape pods he and Mac use just go straight down. We don't know how a real human ship would land, so it's possible that the spiral trajectory of the alien ship wasn't different from a human ship. Well, you have to give it the benefit of a doubt. I have more problems with rocks that give off oxygen when heated.

Before you completely write off the oxygen in rocks theory, read this Time Magazine article!

Pretty interesting!

Hey, that Oxygen-In-Rocks article is really cool (as it relates to this film)!

But speaking of sightings of craft zipping around, what you all think of this:

Shall we "take a skeptical view as to their origin"?

Will do... and thanks for your thoughts.

I am a "nit"-picker (proven in first sentence, eh?). Absolutely, the ships moved really oddly to be confused with a earth ship, I even though that when I saw this movie for the 1st time at about 12 years old in 1977.

I gently suggest however, to my fellow RCOM fan, that what the disconnect between these appearance of the jerky moving ships and the dialog are simply the fact that the they did not put much that much thought into it. The script was written first, and in the screenplay, there was probably a "cut to spaceship" picture. The person doing the effects probably did not really think about the impact of the visual versus the statement.

My 2 cents, worth what you paid.

In a similar vein, I think Earth is in for some serious sh** from these aliens. Pretty clear that there technology and firepower is a bit more advance.

Final notes: Loved the ship, and will enjoy freeze framing the MGP-1. I remember the impact of those first passes in the movie..somehow the use of static shots vs the typical Star Trek "blur-passes" is interesting.

Loved Kitts Gear and the communication box.. Looked some something from a 1950's US bomber. heavy duty and durable, with big clunky toggles etc.

Peace.

the weird thing is the aliens just kinda disappear at the end....wouldn't they have noticed the rescue ship approaching and landing? Did they just give up on Kit & Friday after Kit removed the bracelets?
When Friday goes to Earth with Kit...his language skills would've improved over time and he would have revealed a lot more about who the enemy is etc. and would've made a great sequel but alas...

I was thinking that the aliens went to an awful lot of trouble just to recapture one slave. Was he the last one that they hadn't killed or something?

Even for a race with advanced technology, that must have been a highly inefficient use of their resources.

1. Draper has been alone wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long. Perhaps his desperate need for rescue,as well as survivor's guilt over MacReady, has led to a temporary logic-disconnect.

2. In the RCOM universe, we do not know what spacecraft tech may have been in development. He may have assumed that what he saw was a "next-generation" craft. It certainly was not clear from that distance.

3. The aliens, despite being obvious creeps, may have had some sort of "non-interference" regulation. My own idea was that they, whomever "they" are, are carrying out an "illegal" mining operation. They are not supposed to be here, which may explain the brevity of their excursions, and the silencing of the now-superfluous slaves. Contact with us might, possibly, expose their activities "back home".

Just a thought or two.

I may be wrong but I think he says that when he sees the blip on the radar and before he actually sees the ship.
