End of Movie (Spoilers?)

At the end of the movie (after the meteor strike), were they trying to suggest that the melting of the polar ice cap had now filled the Martian "canals" and that there would be liquid water on the surface? And beyond that, that Mars would now be better capable of supporting life on the surface?

I'm not sure if that was the intent but, if so, it's kinda cool and predates the ending of Total Recall (Arnie version) where the Martian surface is similarly transformed into one more hospitable (although Arnie gave the people AIR!).

Probably, but we didn't know nearly as much about Mars as when Total Recall was filmed. In RCOM, it's suggested that the air is breathable if not exceptionally thin. A little air, a little water...

Any liquid water on Mars would evaporate because of the near vacuum.

Oh, that's what he was talking about! I thought he wanted the colonists to have EHYAH.
