Opinions from people who didn't see it as a kid, please.

I'm never sure how much nostalgia influences people's opinions of these things. Of people who like sci fi, but didn't see this as a kid, did you like it? I see I can get a used Criterion Collection (which I suppose answers my question, but still) DVD for about $20 (that's the 'but still' part).

I don't need CGi, just a decent story.

Thanks!

I first saw it sometime in the 70s when I was in my 20s. From the title I was expecting a crappy b-movie but It surprised me at how much I enjoyed it. It's one of my favorite sci/fi movies.

Back in my day we had nine planets

Thanks for responding. I just saw it a couple of weeks ago, and enjoyed it. It has some pretty corny stuff in it, like the alien space ships, but overall I enjoyed it. I thought the lead actor handled it well. And Adam West, what an unexpected pleasure.

I thought it was awfully slow going. Can't rate it more than 5 stars out of 10.

The first hour was one of the most boring film experiences of my life. It picked up after the aliens arrived, but I was too far gone to see the film as deserving of it's 6.7 rating.

It would have been nice if they had at least foreshadowed the aliens. At around the 40 minute mark, I genuinely thought the whole film was going to be him walking around rocky scenery. The visuals were nice, but they ultimately the best part of the film.

If you look at a film like Planet of the Apes, we don't see the apes until half an hour in, but at least we have conversation between a couple of human characters to keep us occupied. When it's just Crusoe talking to himself or a monkey, it gets old quick.

In hindsight, I think the film would have been a lot better if his reports to the video recorder had been replaced with narration. We could have seen one scene of him talking to the machine and then it would have been understood that all narrations which followed were being spoken into it.

Good insights. Thanks.

I didnt see this film until 2015. I love it. The f/x do not seem primitive to me at all. The jerky motion space ships and planetscape seems avant garde, stylized, and artistic. Not dated and corny at all.
The plot is great and the use of the monkey didnt seem "gimmicky" to me.

I first saw it three years ago and really enjoyed it. I don't think I will watch it again but it made an impression on me.

Saw it today with a friend, laughed most of the way through. Hilariously ridiculous flick, I didn't even know Criterion releases such cheesy movies. Overall 6/10 for the laughs and some background views.

Just saw it on cinemax. It wasn't horrible but it's completely dated. It had the jetsons feel to it.. Where they import 1950's values into it. Sorry to those with nostalgia, but the real future didn't turn out like that (ie religous and paternalistic) especially in the scientific community. Anyway, I didn't enjoy it.

I just watched it on Netflix at age 34 and I did enjoy it. Probably because I like movies where people have non human sidekicks. Such as Bebo the owl in Clash of the Titans or Teddy in A.I., I find it interesting the way humans interact with a different species while being stranded. It may be a little dated but unless Kubrick or Hitchcock made it you can't really ask for much more.

It was a favorite movie for me as a kid back in the '60s. But today, it's just too cheesy to be anything but a b-movie novelty. I generously give it a 4.

So people who saw this as a kid are not allowed to make a comment? I didn't realize we are banned from Imdb.

reply

Of course you can make a comment. What a silly question. In this thread, however, OP wants the perspectives specifically from people who hadn't seen it before. You're welcome to make your own thread or comment in another but this is OP's thread and he chose the topic. I don't think it was meant to be personal.
