Beautiful Anne Bancroft

I thought this film showed Anne Bancroft's beauty more than any other Bancroft film I can think of. I just absolutely loved her in this film. The shot of her at the end of the scene in the beauty parlor is breathtaking.

I thought she was disconnected from her husbands. She has the affair with Finch's character without batting an eye - she is with her husband, sees Finch, and the next thing you know they are married. I took this to mean that she was not particularly connected or in love with her husband. She had a way of being with a man without actually connecting with him, which I think lent itself to the husband having affairs. She probably chose a man who would not squawk about being disconnected, but there were a few signs that Finch's character loved her and wanted to have that connection.

He invited her to go with him on set, but she refused. He wrote "Love Jake" on the list she was making for things to do in the new house. She was always going along with the program, taking whatever happened without much response, until she had undeniable proof that Jake had cheated. Thats when she beat the living tar out of him. When she finally reacted strongly, connecting with Jake over his infidelity, the marriage has a chance. She may have been beating him up, but at least she was finally engaged. In the end he comes back to her because he loves her and there is a possiblity things can work out if she gets her head screwed on right.

What an interesting film, fabulous photography and wonderful characters. I gave it a 10.

I also liked the film, for its mood and performances more than the details. It plays as if in slow motion, with an aching beauty that is unending. James Mason's character was horrid, but it's suggested in one scene exposing her paranoia that she imagined him to be worse than he was.

The real beating scene was powerful because it was emotional more than physical, but not, as we're shown, a real catharsis. The film is too grounded in a grim reality, however simulated, to allow for that.

It's my favorite film of all time. And yes, she's exquisitely beautiful in it. I wrote a User Comment about it on imdb.

I have never considered Anne a beauty -- in fact, I always thought she was rather unattractive. But in this movie, she looked terrific. So sophisticated, and I loved her outfits.
