Guess I'll have to watch this again...

without interruption, because I was cleaning the refrigerator while listening / watching, and I thought it was overly dramatic & full of speeches, but since so many of you feel that it's an incredible film, I will try again.

I have to admit, I had a similar reaction. I had never heard anything about the movie, but I try to watch anything on TCM which has three stars or higher. I didn't know what to expect, other than the brief description on TCM of it being "intense portrayal of a troubled marriage", so I really had no expectations, other than perhaps something along the lines of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe". I really didn't have much of a reaction to it at all, other than an appreciation of the fine performances of Anne Bancroft, Peter Finch, and others. I didn't hate the movie, but I wasn't sure what sort of feeling I was supposed to be left with by the end of the movie.

Interesting that you mentioned WAVW, because 30-some years ago I didn't get that story, then watched it recently on TCM, and now I get what all the hoopla was about. I'm so addicted to TCM !

I record stuff off of TCM all the time, I've really expanded my film knowledge because of it.

I enjoyed this, I didn't find it confusing like some do, but I didn't like James Mason's character (who I thought was really underdeveloped) and that the ending was a bit too cliched, but as a kind of "scenes from a marriage" type movie, it was well done. Great performances by Anne Bancroft and Peter Finch, that's for sure.

The woman's problem is hard to understand and the flashback structure doesn't help. Mason, Smith and Yootha Joyce contribute outstanding support and memorable scenes. Bancroft is convincingly British. The film is ridiculously over directed. Was Mike Nichols influenced by this film? The direction reminds me of Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?

You don't have to like it if others do. But one should try to watch a film without distraction if you want to judge it properly.
