20moose -- your question made me think hard. At first I thought that coming up with similar "mysterious gunmen" would be easy, but not so much, really. Of course many Italian Westerns copied (or at least ran close to) the same sort of story that Leone used. So I'll discount them. Another poster gave a good list of the higher quality Italian westerns.

But in thinking about it, I can't really come up with that many "mysterious gunslingers" as protagonists in westerns. Eastwood did "High Plains Drifter" and "Pale Rider," which fit the bill perfectly. Does his role in "Unforgiven" count as "mysterious?"

"Shane" is really the prototype of the mysterious gunslinger riding in to town and setting things straight. I would highly recommend reading the book "Shane." In the book, he's darker, more mysterious, a bit more "super-powered." Terrific read. The film is a classic, but since I read the book many times before I saw the flick, it stuck with me better.

A couple of off-the-wall choices: Yul Brynner in the truly weird "Invitation to a Gunfighter." Gregory Peck isn't all that mysterious in "The Gunfighter," but it's a good, perhaps a bit old-fashioned, look at a gunslinger. Worth a viewing.

Henry Fonda does a pretty good villainous gunfighter in "Firecreek." Paul Newman in "Hombre." Glenn Ford in the original "3:10 to Yuma" (warning -- this isn't an action picture. Just an excellent drama set in the west.)

James Garner faces several mysterious gunfighters in "Support Your Local Sheriff" to great comedic effect. Sets some of the typical western scenarios on their ear.

Actually, that list of movies would make a pretty good weekend film festival, so I'll sign off.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Yojimbo, the Kurasawa movie this is based on.

While it's not a "western" in the sense that it isn't set in the American Old West (you could argue that Fist Full of Dollars isn't set in the American Old West either), the themes and, of course, the story, are very similar.

Both are superb movies.
