Hepburn + Holden

How did they feel about working together again?? I mean, I know it would be ok, but they used to date and wouldn't they feel awkward to be acting together?

reply

In fact, they did feel very awkward working together again. Hepburn had heard that Holden was still very much in love with her, and he was, but he was nervous about coping with seeing her again, so he started drinking more than ever. He would often show up on the set drunk, and one night, he climbed a tree next to Hepburn's window (Rapunzel style as Barry Paris calls it), and when she came out on the balcony, he fell off the branch onto a car!

thanks a lot TheGreatLittleTramp_4. I didn't know Holden still loved Hepburn!! I mean ten years...it's quite a while! But he was married then, wasn't he?? And she was married too. Wow, that's real love! They would've been the cutest couple in Hollywood!! Too bad Holden had a vasectomy. Anyway, did they get along ok?? I mean like they talked and were teasing one another?? it sounds like they didn't, though..

reply

I'm really not too sure about how they actually got along. Holden's wife was present during the filming of this, so she kept him under pretty close wraps the whole time, but other than that I'm not sure. I would have to say that they probably didn't interact much at all outside of shooting.

On another note, you're right about them being a great couple. Audrey Wilder (Billy Wilder's wife) once said "Bill (Holden) would have made a better husband - if he had been sober," regarding her marriages, and she is probably right, but Holden was indeed a heavy drunk, as well as a philanderer, but that didn't start until after Hepburn dropped him. I tried to recount Barry Paris' account of their Sabrina affair on another board, but I can't remember which one. It went something like,

Bill Holden later called her the "Love of my life," and after she rejected him, he said that his plan was to go and "screw a girl in every country I visited." In Bangkok, he did a girl on a boat, and the boat tipped over, causing him to fall in the water. Needless to say, he told Audrey about it, and her response was something like, "Oh, Bill." This made him upset saying that she was saying that to him like he was some kind of "naughty boy."

yeah I heard that vasectomy stuff too,but I'm quite sure it's nothing he decided to have,he had to do it because of something happened when he was in war, anyway if he was still so madly in loved after all the love affairs he have had with the most beautiful women around at the Time (like Grace Kelly or Capucine -she even left her husband for him-)at least Audreay should have been enticed!

reply

We'll never know. It's not for us to know. I hope Holden's decline wasn't due to Audrey breaking it off with him, but I can see how it might have been. A woman like Audrey Hepburn is one of a kind, and easy to fall in love with and decide that you'll never meet anyone better. But from the pictures on imdb, they obviously were friendly on the set (they look like a couple in that picture with the Eiffel tower in the background). I don't think anyone was good enough for her, but at least Holden was in love with her and would never have had affairs.

By the way, can't a vasectomy be reversed? It must have been some disorder that prevented him from having kids.

reply

I pretty sure that the vasectomy was something that Holden and his wife agreed on. He, who was notorious for his affairs, would have no problems with this of course.

As for his decline, I wouldn't say it was due to their split, but that certainly didn't help. He was a heavy drinker long before Sabrina, and that is what ultimately destroyed him.

reply

Holden's wife was such a bitch,I read on Billy Wilder biography she said to his husband,Right after he had won his oscar,"You didn't deserve it at all,so don't have that stupid happy expression"

reply

wtf?! she really said that to holden?! no wonder why he had so many affairs. i wish he wouldn't have been a heavy drunker. i think he would've been a better husband for audrey than mel ferrer. but as people said, no one was good enough for her

reply

I heard about that comment too about Holden's wife from people, hmm...
maybe she just couldn't handle his fame and was jealous? I don't really like her...

I came by an article stating that when they were dating, Hepburn kept asking Holden to settle down and have kids with her. In one of his drunken stupors, to shut up her nagging, he went and got a vasectomy. When he informed her of it, she broke down shocked with the news and that's basically what ended their relationship. A year later, he heard she was engaged to be married so in a fit of jealousy, he left for Europe bedding as many women he could, and informed her of it when he got back. She sneered that he was probably drunk most of the time which he admitted he was. A shame that an actor with so much going for him, was an alcoholic.

Re;
Holden`s vasectomy was agreed upon after the birth of their second child. I read where Ardis Holden told Audrey Wilder(wife of Billy) that her doctor told her she couldn`t have any more children.Audrey Wilder told Ardis holden that she should have had her tubes tied because sometimes when a man has a vasectomy it threatens his masculinity and makes him want to make love with every woman he sees to prove his manhood.Bill claimed to never have any regrets concerning his vasectomy but with Audrey`s refusing to marry him I think he did.
The scene at the end of PARIS WHEN IT SIZZLES where Bill has the self-loathing monologue-watch Bill and Audrey closely.Bill and Audrey`s relationship is spelled out in this scene. When Bill as Richard Benson says he doesn`t have any thing left to give and Audrey as Gabrielle replys "That`s not true Richard" the tears that appear in her eyes are real. Later on in the scene, Bill talks about too much whiskey and too many women-that`s him talking about himself. The script was based on a french film but George Axelrod also wrote the script especially for Bill and Audrey and incorporated their personal history into the film.It was difficult for both of them(especially bill) but they did the film to complete their contract for Paramount.I`ve seen some of the photos taken on the set and despite the emotional turmoil I think Bill and Audrey shared some happy times to.Audrey`s close friend Capucine was romntically involved with Bill during the making of this film. I have seen a photo of Bill,Audreym Mel Ferrer and Capucine sitting together at a sidewalk cafe table during the making of the film.

This Paramount movie was a dud at the box office...with William Holden and Audrey Hepburn co starring there should have been a lot of sexual heat, but none appears. Richard Quine--who was one of the many who said Kim Novak was the love of their lives...( Sammy Davis Jr.! too thought KN his great love)--- directed this film and even had the slinky star visit him on set..but the whole thing was a hodge podge. Paramount just tossed it rather than releasing it as a Grade A Film.
