Boy, did drinking age Holden that much?

At first, I thought Audrey had been teamed with yet another old guy who could actually be her father but then I compared the ages and Holden was only 11 years older than her.

Sorry for the late response. William Holden was really an incredibly handsome man in the 1950s, but drinking did take its toll on his looks later on. I think you can just see the first signs of it in this film, but he still is very nice looking. You probably know that Audrey and Bill had previously had a relationship - this was the first time they had worked together in years. He apparently wanted to rekindle their relationship, but by this time she was married. They were in Sabrina together - great film

I think you could see it even earlier, Holden from the 50s looked older than he was. Take Sunset Blvd, he was 31 there but looked older. In Sabrina, he looked like he was in his 40s, not someone in his 30s which was his age.

Errol Flynn is another example of drinking taking a toll in one's looks.

Holden always looked so much older than his stated age that I've always suspected him of really being 10-20 years older than he claimed to be. Actors do that.

Yes, I'm responding to a six year old post, but this movie is playing on one of the free streaming channels so what the hell.

I just watched a dvd of this for the first time. I actually thought he looked terrific and that he looked his age (I'm 63). I was very impressed by what good shape he was in (which I think the director/producers felt as well- because they featured his nude torso in a number of scenes.)
I don't know if he did his own jumping-on-the-horse (but i bet he did) and i actually replayed his jumping over the desk manuver, w/ admiration. A very fit guy, i would say.

LOL, I did the same, when I watched the movie for the first time.
I was reminded of a scene in 'Streets of Laredo' towards the end when Holden jumps on a trough, then on the fence and into the saddle. No cuts, so we can be sure he did it himself.

I have to admit William Holden looked like he could be Audrey Hepburn's Dad even though he was about 10 years older than her.

The drinking didn't help, but William Holden was always a rugged-looking man, like Gary Cooper or John Wayne. That was his appeal, in contrast to Cary Grant or Tony Curtis, who had a softer, more European look.
