I so agree with you. With the use of color in this film a blu-Ray release could be amazing if done correctly.

reply

It's 2012 and we're still waiting for the blu-ray of this fantastic film. Come on!

reply

Yes I have to agree bring out this on blu ray already

reply

There is a blu-ray. I think it's from Japanese region. You can find it on torrents.

reply

Would a blu-ray from Japan have English subtitles of a french film?

reply

Well the version I found didn't :)
They could be added manually though, like mine had Russian subs added by somebody.

reply

Never heard of adding subtitles manually. How would you do that?

reply

(Please don't buy the unofficial blu-ray!)

The new restored version of Demy's first film 'Lola' is shown in Paris this week, so I guess The Umbrellas is next.

reply

If there is any film that deserves the "blue ray" treatment, it is "The
Umbrellas of Cherbourg." My local "film society" showed this film a couple of
years ago, and the restoration was superb. I then went out and bought the
restored version on standard DVD.

reply

I know! It's so beautiful, and it totally deserves a bluray release. Next year is its 50th anniversary, so maybe the criterion collection or someone will put one out.

reply

There's a big Jacques Demy exhibition at the Cinémathèque in april, so maybe...

Just hoping.

Restoration took place in the 1990s:

Available DVDs are compared here:

A new work to digitize (for a re-release in theaters in 2013 hopefully) is underway; money has been raised here (story in French):

I trust there will be a blu-ray eventually.

The new digitalized restored version (2K) was shown tonight on Arte TV channel in HD. Following the recent exhibition dedicated to Jacques Demy at the French Cinémathèque last spring, my own opinion is that the Bluray should be made available before christmas...

Needless to say that the image is outstanding :)

Arte did the original scan/restoration in 2013, Criterion and others released their versions in 2014.
