Jacques Demy's other films are well worth exploring, though none of them quite captures "Les Parapluies"'s blend of kitsch and melancholy.

"Lola" covers Roland Cassard's back-story in Nantes. "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" is a much more straightforward, bright and breezy musical that makes some references to both "Lola" and "Les Parapluies", and stars both Deneuve and her sister.

"Une Chambre en Ville" is a later musical with serious themes (class struggle, industrial unrest and domestic violence) that isn't as romantically compelling or musically cohesive as "Les Parapluies", but is a very interesting film in its own right.

You might also consider some examples of the American musical cinema by which Demy was consciously influenced: "West Side Story", "An American In Paris", "Carmen Jones", even "Gigi".

If you can find it, "Jeanne et le Garçon Formidable" is a more modern French film with many similarities to "Les Parapluies", including sung dialogue.

Not exactly similiar, but certainly owes a lot to Umbrellas....; is Les Chanson D'amore. It's a modern french musical, but certainly blends dialogue and songs very well, the two interchange seemlessly.

I certainly enjoyed the 'feel' of it.

Definitely watch the film "Fanny." The two movies are very similar and equally emotional and charming. Some elements are identical. I find Umbrellas to have the more romantic feel overall, but Fanny offers more in terms of the plot and characters. It's really satisfying.

Also check out another classic, "Splendor in the Grass" with Natalie Wood (from West Side Story). The subject matter starts off a bit different, but develops into something very much like Umbrellas. Interesting development of the two lovers and bittersweet ending.

La La Land can be considered a spiritual successor to Les Parapluies.
