Cant believe a German man made this film!

I saw this movie on Aspire channel a few time, and word has it that a german filmmaker made the film. I mean I know there was not a lot of black filmmakers back then,if any but I thought he made this film from a very realistic point of view instead of a degrading perspective which I would have expected exspecially since it was during that time. The movie was great but the wife couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.

If you're referring to Abbey Lincoln's role as Josie, I'd say give this film another viewing. I found her performance to be full of nuance and just the right notes of quiet intensity. A lot is going on underneath her placid, almost monotonous surface; it's a pitch-perfect counterpoint to Dixon's Sturm und Drang.

Helga, I'm not mad at you; I'm mad at the dirt.
