Underated

Is anyone else sick of hearing about the greatest films of all time and seeing the same films regurgitated over and over? The Godfather, Schindlers List, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, blah blah blah. We all know these are good films but they aren't the be all and end all.

I think Suzuki is an amazing director and this is my personal favourite of his films. I'd love to see his work get wider mainstream recognition as they certainly deserve it. And while we're at it why don't we see the films of Ozu, Mizoguchi, Teshigahara, *beep* Herzog, Fassbinder, Cassavetes, Sirk etc in these lists? It seems like most people only consider films from Hollywood in the 70's as true classics. Grr!

That BEEP was Fu-kusaku by the way. To even mention his name is a dirty word on IMDB!

Suzuki is DEFINITELY underrated and unappreciated...but first and foremost, he's vastly unacknowledged. When it comes to Japanese cinema, most people envision Kurosawa, and are generally unaware of the various genres and of non-Kurosawa directors. I love Kurosawa films, but I love Suzuki's films too (at least the three that I have watched so far: YOUTH OF THE BEAST, GATE OF FLESH, and STORY OF A PROSTITUTE), and I value both directors and their films for very different reasons.

I'd agree with you, except Taxi Driver is the best film ever...

FASSBINDER definitely doesn't get the acclaim he deserves -- he made masterpiece after masterpiece. Godard, too -- okay, yeah, his early films are cool, but it seems like the better films of his are the ones no one cares about, while his lesser works (Band of Outsiders, Contempt, Breathless) are the ones that get namedropped. Very strange.

The nearly completely lack of love for Takeshi Kitano -- the greatest filmmaker working in the world today, and also someone highly inspired by Suzuki here -- makes me very sad.

And Branded to Kill is in my top 10 films ever. Just a mindblower of a film.
