Julie Christie was supposed to be the lead

from trivia:
>>Jennie Linden was 11th hour casting choice replacing a actress who dropped out to do another film.<<

according to Jimmy Sangster's commentary on Fear in the Night, Julie Christie was cast as the lead and pleaded with the filmmakers to let her go so she could film Darling, which eventually got her an Oscar.

It's a shame Julie Christie didn't do the lead role in this film. It would have been a kick to see Julie as the star of a non-horror Hammer flick. Still, Jennie Linden did a fine job in a really tough and demanding part.

Nobody does W.C. Fields singing "Mama Told Me Not to Come" better than Paul Frees.

It may have been a kick to see Christie in this but I feel Jennie Linden was better for the role. Very underrated actress who has that valuable asset for actors of strongly evincing an 'inner dialogue'.

It wasn't Darling which wasn't filmed until 1964. The film was Billy Liar.

Jennie eventually went on to "Women in Love" but was largely stage and TV, I imagine: Britain takes care of its acting talent, unlike the States

Jennie was superb, but imagine how less neglected this terrifying Hammer flick, the best of the "mini-Psychos", would've been if it was an early Julie role.
