Yes, when she says "GO-thuh", I couldn't tell if this was a comment on her character or just a flub by Fuller. lol

In the interview with Constance Towers on the Criterion Blu-ray, she says that she was bothered by having to mispronounce "Goethe" and asked Fuller if she could pronounce it correctly. His answer was that he didn't think the character would know the correct pronunciation and overruled her.

So, it was not a flub by either actor or director, but was wholly intentional.

If you speak British English, yes. In American English, the German "oe" sound doesn't exist. You'd have to say "pronounce it the way an English person would pronounce 'Gerter'." Or just check it out on youtube.

I forgot about this thread. I wasn't too sure that's what he was saying either, plus I've heard English speaking people say that name a few different ways.

Reminds me of a time long ago, i was a Freshman or sophmore in college and had not been exposed to Goethe. We were playing Trivial Pursuit and the answer was Goethe. One of my parents friends got it right, pronouncing it the correct way, at which time i informed her no that's wrong. She asked me the answer, and i spouted "Gothe", like it is spelled. Then she corrected me. What a rube, i thought about myself.
I should have known better as she was a librarian.
