Shouldn't Griff be worried about being arrested with Candy and Farlund? After all, from the dialogue, it's apparent that Griff was sending lone women over to Candy's Bon-Bons where they become *ahem* hostesses.
He obviously knew the women weren't selling bon-bons, and were there for another reason. I'm certain if Candy goes up the river for pimping as does Farlund, wouldn't she implicate Griff? If she's going, Griff's going with her.

Griff is a horrible character - but I guess that in those days he could have gotten away with it. 1964 was the time for being a manly machos ruining women's lives.

I'm not sure how Griff was ruining women's lives. I believe the only women he sent to Candy were women who were already in that line of work. Candy's was a way for them to be 'protected' rather than on their own.

In his way of looking at things, he probably thought he was helping them and I think it was a step up from where he found them. Actually, the only ones we know about were Kelly and the bon bon girl he didn't even remember. Both picked him up, offered their services and were on their own. He probably saw them as vulnerable and knew a tough broad like Candy would keep them from falling victim to them men with whom they got involved.

Griff was no saint but I'm not sure he was the horrible character you describe either. He was paying women for sex but it seemed to only be women who were in the business. It was still wrong especially given his job and position but one can argue he wasn't going around using women either.

His relationship with Buff is a good example. She was vulnerable, she trusted and depended on him so he could have easily manipulated her but he didn't. He looked after her and did not send her anywhere near Candy. When Kelly found out she had gone there she was able to get her out just by letting her know what her life would become. She knew it would disappoint Griff.

Also, when he learned Kelly was working with the kids, he was furious and wanted her out. Later when she was about to marry Grant, he again thought she was using him. She was going to run her out of town or reveal her secret. Some guys would have seen it as an opportunity to blackmail her either for money or for special favors or both. He wanted to protect someone he thought was a decent man who had always helped the community.
