Saw this on MST3K, and MST3K guys were hilarious but I like this movie

It was pretty good, a mash up of old fairy tales and folk lore, a likeable protagonist, and the movie is silly in itself, it's a movie directed towards kids and even though I just seen this at 22, I found myself entertained by this movie and not just because it was being riffed on by the mystery science theater guys.
My favorite part of this movie was when he threw the weapons well he let the bandits rob him, and said they would come back during the winter. The whole movie I was hoping for that to happen then at the end it's winter the final battle is won...by falling weapons thrown in the beginning. That clinched it as a movie I could easily watch without the mystery science theater guys, but I only have that copy so it'll do.
I liked the gags in the film and the various nods to other fairy tales even when not having crucial characters. I really enjoy the main dudes initial freakout when he turns into a bear, and curses the lead lady while running away like a hilarious madmanbear. It's a silly movie and given the fact that it's made in russia during the 60's I think it looks relatively good. Gotta love how the step sister get's one upped at the end.
I like this movie I can't see much to hate about it, but that's this man's opinion.

The people of Best Brains were the first to admit that the Russo-Finnish fairy tale films were pretty good in their own right. Sure, their special effects were limited by their time, their acting and stories a little hokey, but they had a charm all their own.

I think this is my favorite of the fairy tale movies they did. I have a soft spot for cheesy old kids' movies, the kind they showed on UHF channels on rainy Sunday afternoons when I was a kid, and I like the old-world European setting of this one.

I wonder if Rifftrax will do a remake of this for some upcoming Christmas, same as they re-did Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and the Mexican Santa Claus?

It is, by far, the best movie shown on MST3K. Entertaining and an ideal movie for a kid. I know I was laughing all the time and not because of Mike and the bots.
