I think MST3K summed it up with the line: So, it's better to speculate about doing a good deed than actually doing one
I can see where the joke is coming from, but I think what the movie was getting at was: a good deed is only truly good if it comes from genuine concern for others.
Before, every time Ivan was trying out good deeds, he was thinking, "This will break the curse and I'll be normal again..." thinking only of himself. But when he saw the blind lady's lost walking stick, he thought, "The poor lady can't walk without it--I have to return it." Finally, he was genuinely in it for someone else, out of concern for her welfare.
(Of course, you could say the moral of the movie was "slightly unattractive people are evil"...😃)
