Soviet fantasy films.

I wouldn't call this film a masterpiece but it definitely stuck in my head. I saw it on mst3k but ended up just watching the movie. Does anybody else know of other Russian or Soviet fantasy films like this.

I have a HUGE collection of Soviet era videos that include a number of fantasy films. Not all have subtitles but to name a few:

SADKO- This is the Soviet, uncut version of "The Magic Voyage of Sinbad".
A TALE OF TIME LOST - Fantasy of a lazy boy meeting witches & sorcerers.
THE STAR CHILD - An episodic tale of a boy from "out there".
SANNICOV'S WORLD -About a 19th century expedition to find a "lost civilization".
THE VIJ - A Russian period horror vampire tale.
ILYA MUROMETS - The Russian version of "Sword and the Dragon".
THE GOLEM - Clay statue brought to life by Jews.
THE GOLDEN KEY - Puppets brought to life ala Pinocchio.
DAY THE EARTH FROZE - (actually Finnish) - Evil witch curses blond Nordics.

Those are a few, there are lots more. Example: there was a dimensional animator ala Ray Harryhausen, who would animate literally dozens of puppets at a time and did a number of films of which "The Golden Key" is only one.
Lots of sci-fi films come with a fantasy tone such as KIN-DZA-DZA - about two Earthmen who are transported across the galaxy to a planet where everything is surreal in a Daliesque sense, and MYSTERY OF THE THIRD PLQANET - an animated film of a family collecting alien species.

Hope this helps.

I haven't seen this film yet. But I've seen VIJ and KIN-DZA-DZA which you mentioned, and I thought they were both excellent. Is MOROZKO as good as those? Why is the IMDb rating so low (3.9)?

reply

well, as it was mentioned in other threads one of reasons for low rating is that the film was ripped off by MST3K crew. i was very surprised to find this movie as an episode of the show, "Morozko" was one of my favorite movie from childhood. but after seeing it with Mike and bots I found some reasons to explain for myself why this film has been taken for the show. actually my rating for the film is 6/10. not the best, but definitely not the worst. a million miles away from manos or another pieces of crap that have appeared on the MST3K.

and of course KIN-DZA-DZA is excellent!

tozaiminka, did you see MST3K's version of 'DAY THE EARTH FROZE'. It's pretty good. The Bullwinkle joke is one of my favorites.

The sword and the dragon is a film in the " Jack Frost" mode. If you liked Jack Frost, you would like this

Check out "Ruslan and Ludmilla". The copy I have is annoying because whoever subtitled it thought it would be cool to rhyme every line, even at the cost of some dialogue being downright ridiculous. But the movie is beautiful and has the fun, cinematic grandeur, bogatyr folklore, and gorgeous aesthetic like "Father Frost".
