Nick Roeg was the DP on this movie and it shows. The use of color and light is amazing.

Very true! However, it looks like they are using (or had to use) early-generation anamorphic lenses. You can tell by the warping on the sides. As figures move toward the edges of the screen, they become compressed. There is a panning crowd shot earlier on where it is most evident.

You usually saw this in the early Cinemascope lenses of the mid-1950's. After that, though, later-generation lenses lessened that effect. But, in 1964, it appears that they might have been using these older lenses. Budget restrictions, perhaps.

I noticed that. Today they could trim that on premiere or final cut.
