Esmeralda

I doubt you could get away with casting a child as an adult midget now, especially when she has an adult's voice dubbed on. You'd be accused of being paedo-friendly.

The character always annoyed me because of her dubbing.

Don't think that I'm insulting people with dwarfism, but I think they needed an elegant dancer and just couldn't find a dwarf who fit that role and thus used a child and dubbed the voice with an adults.

I agree, but at the same time when viewed in this day and age, it comes off as rather creepy. But yes, it was simply a case of Corman not being able to find a female dwarf who fit the role of a small but beautiful ballerina. He as much as says so on the Scream Factory BluRay interview.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

This was odd. I thought that the character as well as the actor was a normal sized little girl until she opened her mouth to speak. Only than did I realize that the character she was playing was meant to be a "little person" and her voice was dubbed with a grown women's voice. Wierd. She didn't even look like a dwarf.

Being that it was AIP, I doubt they could find a midget with the dance skills or even afford one. The casting doesn't bother me because I know the issues they had, but the dubbing was awful.

I also thought the dubbed voice was odd, perhaps a bit too mature? But I too understand why they had the little girl in the part. She was lovely and very graceful -- and had to be attractive (and innocent) enough to make creepy Alfredo lustful.

Agreed, though the dreadful dubbing only serves to draw attention to the casting of a child, sadly enough.

I thought she was supposedly a child, but the adult dubbed voice was peculiar.

Its that man again!!

It got even creepier once you take into account that Prospero had sex with her.

I assume she was meant to be a pituitary dwarf, with normal (or childlike) proportions. But would such a person have the voice of an adult woman or a squeaky voice? I suppose they had to dub her voice, otherwise she would just have sounded like a child.
