This film kind of wasted Glynis Johns

Glynis Johns did a wonderful job in her role. She should have been given way more songs to sing, and way more screen-time.

If I was making the film, then I would have cut out:

- the entire 17 minute half-baked animation sequence that starts when Mary jumps into the picture (but I'd probably take enough of that time back as is necessary to work Supercalifragilisticexpialidociou into a new scene)

- all of the scenes that include Bert's chimney sweep buddies (but I'd keep the scenes of Mary leading them into the skies...up until Bert's creepy buddies pop-out and ruin it)

- better yet, I'd probably cut Bert out of the film entirely. He's kind of a useless character and Andrews'/Mary's singing vastly outclasses his (I'm not sure if that is largely because of DVD trying to sing with a fake accent, or if Andrews would vastly outclass the normal DVD's voice too).

- every single scene featuring the sea captain with a fake boat on his roof. His character is not only completely pointless, but also annoying too.

...and then I'd give all of that screen-time to Glynis Johns.

That would improve the film a lot.

What are you an idiot?

but the film is supposed to be about mary poppins and the children rather than about Mrs Banks. and what would you have her do?

reply

What I would have her do is feature her in a new subplot in which she uses her feminine charm to contribute to making the father stop being such a tightwad.

reply

I'm thinking she would have a couple songs where she remembers how romantic her early life with Mr Banks was and one where she declares her love for her kids and is determined they continue to move forward as good citizens of the community.

Glynis Johns was cute in it.

How about cutting out those wretched, unfunny, grim, boring scenes INSIDE THE BANK with Van Dyke as an old fossil - oh that horrible bank song.............really stains the movie for me. Depressing part of an uplifting movie.

"In every dimension , there's another YOU!"

reply

Yeah, good call, this film could do without those bank scenes too. Better actually to go feed the birds.

She was used fine to me.

Johns could have played Mary Poppins.
