Shaw is to 'Ginger Coffey' as Dreyfuss is to 'Duddy Kravitz'?

Was this movie a success or was it panned?

When Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss were filming Jaws, Dreyfuss' Canadian movie 'The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz' came out to good reviews in the NYT. It was another movie about a dreamer/schemer in Montreal. Supposedly Shaw would tease Dreyfuss to no end about the good reviews of '...Kravitz'. I wonder if, deep down, Shaw was a little jealous because of his own Canadian made movie back in the 60s.

Ginger Coffey is coming to my local screen in a couple of weeks-guess I'll have to see it again after five decades. It was an enjoyable film, no great achievement for Shaw or Kirshner. I can't remember the critical reception; it probably garnered a few good reviews then was forgotten (and a Canadian film can really disappear). The presence of Canadian actors like Tom Kneebone and Jacques Godin helped.
