Does anybody have details on the car used in the record attempt?

I'd like to find out details on who constructed the yellow car used in the Bonneville Flats sequence - can anyone help me out?

reply

I've found that streamliner before, but couldn't, today. A lot of sites mention it, but that's it. If you google 'lively set photos', there is one of the car. Click on it, and it's a movie clip.

Too bad Chrysler destroyed all but one of the Turbine bodies. They were built by Ghia(?), and they crushed them rather than pay taxes on them! As a kid, someone up the street had one. (you couldn't own one, like the GM electric car. But you could test them, until they needed them back)

Actually, there are about ten of the Ghia Turbine cars still around. Jay Leno owns one, and there are seven or eight in various car museums around the US (one is in Reno, NV). I think Chrysler may still own one or two, also. It would be interesting to know if the one that appeared in The Lively Set is still extant, or if it was one of the unfortunates.

I believe the OP was referring to the car run on the Saltflats and not the passenger car. In any case, when AMC ran the Lively Set back in 2002 there was commentary afterwards which stated all the Turbine cars (about 200) Chrysler built had been destroyed. And the person doing the commentary reluctantly added "including the one used in the film" so based on that it is no longer in existence. But, they also said "all were destroyed" but that's not true as Jay Leno does own one and there are others as were mentioned.

I think that streamliner might be one of Art Arfons' early Green Monsters.

reply

It's definitely not an Arfons LSR car, as they were jet powered & not what are considered streamliners. There's some speculation that it might be the Immerso Streamliner, but that hasn't been validated so far.

Right, I understood the OP's original question about the salt flats landspeed car. But if you turn on the "thread nesting" feature you will see that I was replying directly to jondoe888's claim that all the Ghia turbine coupes were destroyed. Bonus Fun Fact: the footage from The Lively Set's yellow landspeed car is used in the credits of Gazzara's series Run for Your Life.
