Is the Criterion Collection dvd the full version?

The 183 min cut?

reply

No. It's the 161-minute cut.

Yeah, get the Eureka! release, it is the 183 cut. ;-)

What's in the missing twenty minutes ?

Why would Criterion release a shorter cut? Is it the Director's cut or something?

I believe it was the original cut for the western world (maybe just the US though). It is strange that they cut out 'Yuki-Onna' as it holds up very well and has a great star in Nakadai Tatsuya; who is famous for his collaberations with Kobayashi.

Yuki-Onna is in the Criterion Collection DVD. I believe those 20 minutes were cut in Hoichi the Earless or something.

Can someone verify that the 22(?) missing minutes are from Hoichi the Earless?

reply

All the more reason why Criterion needs to re-issue it on DVD and Blu-ray.

reply

I've just bought the Eureka! DVD through amazon.co.uk. The DVD package is great and includes a nice booklet. Great value for money.

Since when do Criterion not release a full cut (unless it's a licensing/rights thing)?

Can't they put the missing sequence under 'Deleted Scenes' at least?
