Kwaidan just may be one of a kind. And despite all the things it does right and masterfully, I think the most impressive thing about it may be its set design. For a mid-60s film, I'm surprised it's even in color, let alone sporting some of the most beautiful set combinations and color schemes ever seen.
With that said, can anyone recommend any awesome and atmospheric Japanese horror films from the 70s?
And does anyone have any idea where I can see the Yotsuya kaidan film? It's not available anywhere. Can it be downloaded someplace? Or does someone have a file of it they would like to share?
I'm not a control freak, I just like things my way
Yep---check out HAUSU, a 1977 Japanese horror film , which is actually like a postmodern deconstruction of horror movie cliches (long before it became the cool thing to do, like the SCREAM movies) and is truly crazy, and inventive with weird as hell scenes happenings--the dancing skeletons, a piano that eats people, and all that. Here's the trailer for it:
Also check out EVIL OF DRACULA, a 1974 Japanese vampire film that comes off (at least to me) like a Japanese take on a Hammer film--here's a clip for that one, too:
This one's actually a 1960 film, but the classic JIGOKU (HELL) is worth watching and pretty damn graphic considering the time it was made---here's a trailer:
As for YOTSUYA KWAIDAN, I saw it a couple of years ago at www.asianhorrorfilms.com,but you have to jump through all kinds of hoops to watch anything on there at all anymore. I think it's on DVD, but you'd have to check for sure. I saw the 1959 color version, and I enjoyed it----the wife looked creepy as hell when she came back to haunt her hateful spouse.
