Hoichi The Earless (the extended version)

Havin just finished to see the extended, 183 minutes, version of the movie released in the Eureka DVD, I can't help asking myself - anyone else absolutely blown off by the "new" editing of "Hoichi The Earless"? In both sequences involving Hoichi's chant it really elevates the movie (just with few touches) from "just a very good flick" to almost Kubrick-like quality.

Any thought on this?

Could you give a description to those of us who have not seen the extended version?

reply

I have the long cut, 183 minutes and I think it rocks! 10/10

Having watched DVD from Eureka I was also surprised to see the additional episodes.

True, merge of music and painting, and Hoichi's chant, music of Biwa does inspire the viewer think about the plot and tragedy of war.

The colors in this case and movement of camera do shape the process of movie understanding.

I have the Eureka DVD, it is great, indeed. I have never seen the Criterion version but I have read about it; it sounds quite bad for a Criterion release, I mean no features?

The song and the biwa music are an important part of the story and wonderful to boot. Cutting them out wouldn't work.

Almost Kubrick-like quality? This film is much better than anything Kubrick did in my opinion.

reply

I don't think this is better than everything Kubrick has done. I'd rate A Clockwork Orange above Kwaida, but that's it.

But, if we're talking about horror movies alone, I'd agree this is miles ahead of that overrated crock of s**t The Shining.

reply

I disagree. I just watched "A Clockwork Orange" the other day and found it really dated (it's still a good and unique movie). I agree with the poster that stated this was better than anything Kubrick ever made (The Masters of Cinema uncut release). "Kwaidan" is a timeless masterpiece.

reply

Okay yes, now on second thought, I agree Kwaidan is better than ACO. But that doesn't mean Kubrick only made bad movies.

Okay, yes, I missed that one. My bad.
