Amazing 1960's Cinematic Landmark...

Some really incredible films were made in the 60's, many of them just as brilliant, modern, original, and challenging as when they were made 40-50 years ago. This is a Japanese counterpart to Kubrick's 2001, both films of astounding innovation and originality. Back then, genius was expected from films, not merely requested. It is amazing how many film-makers proved up to challenge. Watching a film like this once every Halloween is a cleansing experience for me, and reminds me what great art looks, sounds, and feels like. There could be no better example of the exalted standards of movies in the "Second Golden Age of Cinema" than Kaidan.

Very astute observations, Chrisomacin. It's unfortunate it's taken almost six years for someone to acknowledge that, but hopefully late is better than never.

Film was very much about artistry in the '60s and most of the '70s, and occasionally artistry was met with commercial success. But when it didn't, the artists were allowed to continue their vision.

This anthology provides a true rejuvenation for the senses, and every shot is suitable for framing.

It's too bad that this masterwork is cut and the print is dreadful on its US DVD. The Criterion Collection should be ashamed of that dreck DVD they released in 2001. Fans should write Criterion for a Blu-ray.
