Just got a english subtitled copy of this and am about 30 mins. into it. It does take place at the end of WWI and is shaping up to be a wartime romance. But with the Bulgarian backdrop and scenic images, it is a welcome relief from 21st century American drivel.

As mentioned it is a tale of illicit love between a POW and the kommandants wife. No profound acting or script, it is after all a very simple story of forbidden romance with tragic consequences.
For me, more than anything is the acquisition of such rare titles and to see how other cultures deal with daily living and universal plight. It is a very entertaining movie for those not addicted to FX and teenage dialogue, I recommend a viewing.

I liked it as well.

Check out BLESSINGS OF THE LAND on youtube, it is from 1959 from the Philippines and I guess you will like it, too ( as I did).

You know how I think then because I've just recently downloaded that very movie. You're right, it's an excellent film. In the last couple days I have been able to obtain a couple Filipino titles, like Insiang, another fine movie.

I have been fortunate to get an invite to Karagarga and Surrealmoviez so am now swimming in the worlds best cinema.

What a coincidence! :-)

I wish you a happy swim!!!

I do agree with you that the output of todays cinema - at least from the US, sorry to say - is 99% crab.

The "problem" with many of the old movies is that they are hard to come by (but definitly worth the effort) and often do not have any subtitles. Here are two more recommendations (maybe you know them already), which are on youtube WITH English subtitles:

FäHRMANN MARIA (Germany, 1936)
La ragazza con la valigia (Girl with a Suitcase) w/English Subtitles {Italy, 1961}

You can find them easily with these infos on youtube.

I could recommend 2, 3 dozen more German and Austrian and Italian movies from the 30ies to 50ies, but they are all without subtitles. :-(( It´s amazing, how many great, lovely, warm-hearted and throughly entertaining movies were made back then.

Happy viewing! :-)

Right you are! Countless times I've managed to download the avi. of a movie, usually about 6 or 7 pages deep into Google on some obscure Russian website, only to find that sloppy Russian voice over, that speaks for all characters, male and female and then realize there are no English subtitles anywhere. Didn't take long to discover subtitles are just as precious as the avi. of any foreign film.

This dilemma has fostered a very interesting cottage industry; fan made subtitles. Machine made suck bad, they're infuriating as many have found. So folks from all over theworld generate English subtitles, have others proofread them, synchronize them and post them for everyone. I'm surprised some documentarian hasn't chronicled this fascinating endeavor because these fan made subs have over the last 10 years made available films that the English speaking world can now enjoy. You know good and well the Holly, Bolly, or Nolly woods aren't going to do this with all the thousands of obscure movies the world has made so who better to do it than the ones that appreciate international cinema.

Great talking to you and glad to see that I'm not alone in appreciating old grainy B/W Tagalog or Wolof films of yore.
