Margaret supposed to be 17...

Does anyone think she really looked 17? I wasn't around in the early 60's but does she look the age she's portraying? I think she looks her real age in the movie myself.

No, she didn't really, but that was pretty much Hollywood's modus operandi back then.........and they've been known to do A LOT worse (Stockard Channing, wrinkled and nearly 35 years of age, playing a high school student in 1978's Grease, leaps to mind).

Also, don't forget that it was only a year earlier that Ann-Margret played the chaste (16 year old?) "Kim McAfee", in Bye Bye Birdie.

So, for her, this was really nothing new........and to be honest, she did look relatively young for her age back in those days.....

People often say that about Grease - but we're not *supposed* to believe Channing (for example) is 16! Any more than we're supposed to believe LA high school students in the late '50s did song and dance routines in class and had flying cars. It's just cos teen actors couldn't have accrued that level of talent to play those roles.

Anyway, I think A-M looked her age (22), yes. But not all such roles went to actresses who didn't pass - Tuesday Weld and Carroll Baker both looked 18 well into their early 20s.
