I was a Losey fan at university but haven't seen it since then. On the list now.

Barry Foster used to be a brilliant actor. Where did it all go wrong?*

reply

It wasn't a restored copy and the picture and sound were a bit worn; given the subject it rather added to the atmosphere. Nice to see the pictures from The Great War as well. They rather cheated by showing a cropped version of HMS Barham blowing up in 1941 as a land explosion.

Foster was playing a dubious American (Aren't they all?*) in Sweeney! the other night, hmmmm....

Very sad

"a dubious American (Aren't they all?)"

Just a bloody bigot in the end, aren't you now?

Just watched this film for the first time. Some pretty nasty black comedy in there, like Losey stole a little from Lester to twist the knife a little. A bit clunky in the presentation, but there's too many worthy points being made to hold that against the film. Well worth seeing.

Perhaps I should have put ;O) in for people who might misunderstand the quip. ;O)

Perhaps I should have also. Same intent.

You fished me in, good an' proper.

Does expressing my feelings that it was a sad movie make me some sort of stupid Yankee bigot? It certainly wasn't comedy, romance or even an action flick.

reply

It was a moving film but also a little arty from monsieur Losey!

Its that man again!!

reply

Super performances from Bogarde and Courtenay but preferred "Paths of Glory" and "Uomini Contro."

reply

Yes, it was a low-budget Paths Of Glory. A very good film, a biographer of Losey named David Caute who was rather hostile to his subject called it a "minor masterpiece".

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."
