For me Mme Monteil is the most disgusting character. She, with her Catholic thinking, does not let her husband in her bed and when she does, as the priest later reconfirms, does not to it for pleasure. And she is so parsimonious!

Isn’t she more of a victim than a villain? In fact, isn’t every woman in the film a victim of rampant male egos and lusts, with poor little Claire the extreme example? Célestine fights back, using her feminine assets, but at the end isn’t she in as bad a trap as before?
