Great book crappy movie

Man this movie sucked. I loved the book but this movie is just terrible. Hopefully someone will do a remake even though I hate remakes, but I think this movie deserves one.

I'm watching it in school right now and the acting is terrible! I smell a remake!

a remake would be wonderful... a proper movie to show how amazing the book is.

Finally, someone who can hate this movie with me. I read the book for a class prject and I thought the book was a little good. But, my teacher let me and the other 5th grade (and 6th grade)kids in the school watch this and BOY WAS IT HORIBLE. THE ACTING WAS LAME, THE WILD DOGS WERE JUST WRONG, THEY USED THE SAME FOOTAGE OVER AND OVER AGAIN, AND THE DEATH SCENES LOOKED SO FAKE. I MEAN WHEN KARANA'S BROTHER DIES THERE IS NOT A SCRATCH OR WOUND ON HIM. THE FILM LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE BY DISNEY FOR PETE'S SAKE. WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO REMAKE IT. THIS MOVIE IS STUPID. NOT KINDA STUPID OR A LITTLE STUPID ITS COMEPLETELY STUPID WITH A CAPITLE S. So, enjoy your day

I completely agree! I too hate remakes, but this movie definitely deserves one!

If you were my age now (48), you would have appreciated the movie more when you were younger. :-) I loved it AND the book when I was a child.

I'm rather surprised that a teacher today has 11 year old kids reading it for book reports today. It's all meant for a younger audience (especially these days of the short-attention-span, video game generation... sorry, but it's true). I was six years old in 1964 when I saw the movie and probably eight years old when I read it for school (third grade).

A remake today would still be geared toward younger children unless they veered severely from the original story. There's not enough of "whoa! dat blowed REAL good!" in it to keep the rest of you happy. ;-)

LOL, I totally agree. I'm 48 now myself and saw this when it first came out. I remember thinking it was just wonderful. Of course I haven't seen it since, so have no idea what I'd think of it today.

I had to read this book in 4th grade too

We didn't watch the movie though

I figured I'd search for a movie, and here it is. Doesn't sound too good though lol

I read the book in the first grade and loved it!!! I have never seen this movie, and I probably wont, if it is as most on here said lame, then I dont want it to ruin the book for me.

i read this book in like 2nd grade for class, from what I can remember from the book it would make a fantastic movie if it was updated... but I'm still waiting for the movie version of catcher in the rye...

I do not agree. I saw the film in 1964 when I was 13 years old and loved it. I had read the book before the film was made. Perhaps more significantly was the reaction of my mother, a school librarian at the time who thought that the book was one of the best children's books written to that point in time. She liked the film even more than me, and in response to my sending her my top 100 films list some 11 years ago she made one of her own and placed this upon it. She wrote "Simple story of survival. Did you list this? I can't remember." No, it was not on my top 100 list, but I still think it was a fine film. It was done on a low budget but was very effective. I am surprised how poor a reputation it has with so many people. I do not think we need a remake.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

My parents read the book to me when I was 4, I only remember emotions from the story, not exactly the events. I certainly couldn't have been on the vanguard of this as my parents were 3 and 4 when the movie came out! I don't think I've ever seen the movie though, maybe I should keep it that way with these reviews. Seems like the film was rushed with no budget and the issue's been dropped ever since.
I have been noticing a lot of the best 20th Century novels had movie adaptations within a couple years of their publication, which I thought was a recent fad.

I also remember reading it when I was a school girl -- and seeing scenes of the movie as well. From what I saw I liked it very much. It was made for younger kids -- and that's probably why I enjoyed it so much. I actually would not mind seeing the movie and reading the book again after all these years.

I also remember hearing our 4th grade teacher reading it to us after the lunch break. One of our classmates wrote to the Santa Barbara Mission concerning Karana and they wrote back that not much was written about her or known about her. Scott O'Dell wrote another book following up on this one and included some unknown family members from the mainland involving the Native Americans from the Warner Springs area of NE San Diego county. I thought it strange that her little brother was killed by wild dogs with no blood, mayhem,or any other visible wounds on his body. It also amazed me that her little brother would be so disobedient. I grew up in the area where this was filmed. If it was made again it should be made where it happened with Native Americans of the same nation and not people of a nation from a different part of the state entirely. This was filmed off the Mendocino County coastline of Northern CA with the Poma and not the Chumash or Kumiyaye of Southern CA where this actually occurred.

It's not that bad of a movie. I saw it as a kid only once & I liked it well enough to wanna find it again & now I'm watching it on YouTube.
