Pro-evolution controversy

While promoted as a family film, portions of this film will be deeply offensive to some Christians due to the openly pro-evolution bias of the main character.

Mr Limpet (Don Knotts) pronounces that the world is millions of years old (not 6,000) and lectures the audience that humans descended from fishes and amphibians that came out of the sea.

If this film were made today it would trigger protests. How could the public of 1964 turned a blind eye to this blatant platform for Darwinism?

reply

I'm not sure if you are actually joking, so it's hard to respond appropriately. :) I hope you were making light of creationists in a dry way, because I did actually laugh, so if so - well done!

Funny that you posted this 6 months ago. When I put the title in the search space, a preproduction for a remake in 2011 popped up.

I was raised in a Christian, pro-creationism, non-evolutionary-Darwinism family, and we have never had a problem with this movie. We enjoy it as a light, family-friendly comedy that stars a wonderful actor, Don Knotts. Some people just have to find a problem with everything, I guess.

I agree bcoaggie I was raised in a christian home, and am still a strong believer. And I absolutely love this movie! People who find problems like that really make it hard on us true believers.

Christ! You must have had a all-out fit when you saw Jurassic Park!

reply

Well you don't have to watch it. Keep living your pro-imaginary friend world, while the rest of us enjoy reality. No need to throw a temper tantrum everytime you're reminded, that your precious Goddy is just a figment of your imagination.

reply

That's rude.

And the OP did not say he/she was deeply offended, she/he said some Christians may be.

reply

Although your a-hole remark is a number of years old, it's worth--barely--responding to based on what a select few others are saying too.

For the record, there is no mention in the Bible that the Earth is 6000 years old. I know of no Christian that believes this. Of course, there are Christians, and Atheists, and Jews, that might personally believe that men lived when there were dinosaurs. Or that aliens created life. Or whatever. It doesn't represent what most Christians believe.

What I DO find amazing is the God-hating douchebags like you that all sound EXACTLY the same, who bring out the same old tired combinations of "imaginary friend", "imaginary man in the sky" and other derogatory statements that sound like you are ALL singing from the same hymn book.

Your hatred of anything that has anything to do with God is palpable. Yet, you hypocritical walking anus, you subscribe to the same type of groupthink of which you accuse Christians.

Down to the exact same terminology.

Truth is, you have NO proof of the non-existence of God, to the extent that evolution and creation may in fact BOTH be correct, what happens after you die, or anything else. You have YOUR theories, others have theirs.

By the way, Christians, including myself, don't have a temper tantrum over people who don't believe. We do laugh at your hypocrisy and wonder--very briefly, where your insecurity stems from. My guess? You're a failure, and deep down, you question how could a "God" have let you down and allowed you such a miserable little life. Therefore, there can be no God, because for you, it hasn't worked. If there was a God, surely he would have intervened to help you! It is beyond your scope to handle the possibility that there IS a God, who lets you live your life and have your experiences, and that the failure STILL is all on you.

reply

Those who don't believe a god exists can't hate god. And your point of proving god DOESN'T exist is ridiculous. Can you prove unicorns don't exist?

There is more evidence for that possibility than any god that people choose to believe in. You have horses that live on this planet, and there are horned animals. No such evidence for gods, that's what faith is for, and faith isn't based on logic or rational thought. Faith just means you have a space for the possibility.

reply

What atheist believes humans lived with dinosaurs? I know a lot of atheists, and only if they are extremely ignorant of history, would I believe an atheist believes such nonsense.

Completely sounded like a temper tantrum.

Tell us about Piltdown Man.
"Goddy" yet! Oh, you are full of clever remarks...
How often do you slither out from under your large wet rock?

reply

Oh no, not those "Evilutionsists"?

reply

There are many of us modern Christians who believe the earth is way older than 6000 years.

reply

Actually almost all major Christian and Jewish sects subscribe to some form of Evolution. He was prolly just parodying the mindset of some fundy boneheads

reply

I haven't read the rest of this thread but all I have to say to you is SO WHAT!

It's is pure idiocy to believe man and earth et.al. has only existed for the past 6000 years. You creationists are a bunch of nutcases. God in heaven will have a very special place for you if you reach it. It will be a very paddle cloud where everyone whispers so has not to frighten you into running into the walls. NO ONE would protest this film.

It's entirely possible that I am missing the point of your message.

reply

What you and the various a-holes on this thread don't seem to understand are some clear, basic facts.

Christians, by and large, do not believe that the universe has only existed 6000 years. Nowhere is that in the Bible. No one I know believes that.

There is no reason that creation and evolution could not co-exist. There are plenty of theories that include this. My opinion? Only "nut cases" would believe that a fiery, hot rock in space would suddenly create living, developing cells, which would evolve on their own into humans. With no influence, no great design, no nothing. Just because of time.

So, my stupid, ignorant little friend, let me dumb it down for you. Just because someone believes in a Creator, does not mean they believe everything has only been around 6000 years.

On the other hand, I wonder how a living pile of human waste matter like you has managed to figure out how to add comments in a forum.

Not every well, it appears.

And I'll bet your mother had a loud bark.

reply

Wow! If Christians want to believe in their ancient myths, that's their problem, but evolution is simply fact! They can deny all they want, but science does not require their belief.

reply

Christians don't believe in myths. However, if you want to show me the science that absolutely proves that complex, cellular, living organisms sprung forward from rock and inorganic material, without a great design, please do so.

I'll give you carbon, minerals, water, some base elements and I'll throw in all the power you need.

Create life. Let's see you do it.

When you have the answers, with proof following the Scientific Method (look it up, you may learn something), I'll take a look at it--until then, STFU. Your ignorant yammerings about what you think Christians believe are bullet points from your Young Atheists meetings...please at least try to be original.

BTW, evolution and creation can actually co-exist, but be careful, I don't want your head to explode by grappling with such sophisticated ideas.

reply

All religions are myths or no religion is a myth.
